Vanlife Comfort — Sensor Setup for California, Marco Polo & Nugget

· by 040 Team

Vanlife Comfort

If you're traveling in a VW California, Mercedes Marco Polo, or Ford Nugget, you know: vanlife sounds like freedom, but in the details it's a question of many small setups. One of them: getting the vehicle onto the pitch without your coffee mug rolling off the table at night.

Three vans, three layouts

VW California (T6.1, T7). Pop-top plus lower bed. Compact, everything inside. You feel tilt both in the pop-top and the lower bed — though the top is more pleasant (closer to the pivot point).

Mercedes Marco Polo. Comparable to the California, slightly longer with rear kitchen. Axle load distributes differently, the rear tends to sit lower when loaded.

Ford Nugget. High roof (no pop-top), taller body, bigger bed. Center of gravity sits higher — lateral tilt is especially noticeable here.

In all three cases, the app + a multi-step wedge handles 90% of pitches.

Which spots are comfortable?

In a ~5 m long, ~2 m wide camper, tilt in the bed is more noticeable than in a 7 m motorhome — the lever is shorter, but the effect is in tighter space.

What works well in vans:

Avoid: pitches where the vehicle tips backward (rear low, front high). You'll slide toward the foot end of the bed.

Sensor setup in a van

The BLE sensor needs a position that is:

1. level relative to the bed surface 2. firmly anchored (no loose Velcro) 3. out of the way (not on the bench seat, not in a cupboard with clothes on top) 4. not exposed to extreme heat (no dashboard in the sun)

Classic positions:

First time, calibrate the sensor on a level surface (your reference position at home), the app stores the orientation. From then on it measures relative to this reference.

040 hack: sensor with adhesive pad under the bed

Our best tip: 3M adhesive pad (Command Strips or Sugru) and stick the sensor to the underside of the bed's wooden panel. Advantages:

Before applying: degrease the surface (dish soap, then dry), press the sensor for 5 minutes, let cure 24 h.

Multiple vans? Multiple profiles.

If you have family and occasionally borrow a friend's van (or switch between a California and a second camper): our app stores multiple sensor profiles. Calibrate once per vehicle, then switch in the app with a tap.
